March 2007

HELLO AND WELCOME to the Spring edition of the Cononley Newsletter!

My name is Sue Whitehead. I have lived at Prospect House on Crosshills Road for over 20 years and, having brought up my children here, I am very familiar with the village and its organisations. I have taken on the editorship of the newsletter following Mark and Becky's decision to finish. I would like to take the opportunity to thank them both for the excellent work and time devoted to it up until now. I look forward to continuing to keep you informed of all the news and events in the village. Of course, I shall be relying on you all to keep me posted and updated at any time. The newsletter is published four times a year in December, March, June and September and is delivered to all houses in the village. Any contributions will be gratefully received.

Announcing a New Book:

Edited with an introduction by David Gulliver.
To be published shortly by Kiln Hill (Cononley Local History Association).

The Manor Courts offer glimpses of the mundane relationships, concerns and disputes in past centuries of ordinary people whose actions would otherwise be unknown to us. The meetings dealt with agricultural disputes between tenants, changes of tenancy and some minor criminal offences - including some problems which still concern us. The records also provide many listings of people who lived not only in Cononley but also in Cowling, Farnhill, Newsholme and Oakworth. The book will also include four distinct Farnhill Court rolls which record events in the lives of people who lived in the early 17th century at properties associated with the former Knights Hospitallers and situated throughout the historic parish of Kildwick. The translations from Latin of the earlier rolls were commissioned from Brooke Westcott and financed by the Association.

We plan a substantial A4 booklet containing approximately 70 pages which will include illustrations of a number of the documents, saddle stitched, with an attractive card cover. The final specification will depend on the number of pre-publication orders received along with a payment of £10 for delivery in Cononley {or £12 elsewhere} by the end of March 2007. Publication is planned for June. To be sure of receiving a copy use this pre-publication order form. Only a limited number of copies may be available later.

Please supply copy/ies of Cononley Manorial Rolls.

Vacancy on the Parish Council.

Cononley Parish Council needs to co-opt someone to fill a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. The Council is keen to find someone who is concerned about a variety of issues and services affecting the local community. If your first reaction is to think that you do not fit your image of a councillor, then have second thoughts, because the council needs men and women of all ages and backgrounds in order to fully represent the village.

If you believe that you could be such a person, please write to the Clerk at the address given below by 12th March 2007. You will need to give enough information about yourself to enable the Council to make a decision. Please give your full name and address, postcode, telephone & (if available) e-mail address. There are few restrictions on who can be a councillor but you do need to be on a current electoral list and live in or within three miles of Cononley. If this does not appeal to you but you know of a suitable person, please encourage them to come forward.

Please contact David Gulliver, Clerk to the Council if you want further information about the Council and its responsibilities. >br> (3, Tillotson's Court, Meadow Lane, Cononley. BD20 8NG. Tel. 01535 637962)
